[Hey dear reader, before I let you read my contest entry, please read description first! An epic story needs an epic music, right? Scroll down! Thank you~]

You sat on a log, staring at the campfire in front of you.  It was a late night and the beautiful full moon illuminated the sky. The flames looked like very lonely spots of light against the dark forest. From somewhere far away you could hear some unlucky deer’s shrieks of pain as a wolf tore it apart. A light breeze waved your hair. A perfect silence, how lovely.

You leaned back and lifted your gaze high up to the stars. You felt like every one of them was watching you.

Wish me luck, you said to them.

The silence was broken by the gritting of shoes, and the sound kept coming closer. “_______, are you ready to go? Berwald sharpened your sword and Tino made you more arrows”, said the tall Viking who sat down next to you. His blonde hair looked like it tried to reach to the stars… or actually to everywhere, because his hair sticked out all around as scattered tresses. Even in the dark his deep blue eyes glowed with excitement and warmth more effectively than any campfire. Though he was a Viking, he was a noble and kind-hearted person, maybe the most kind-hearted one that you knew. He was Mathias Køhler, the second most famous dragon hunter around – right after you.

It was quite unusual that women volunteered to travel around the province, killing the dragons that tormented the area. But you had your whole old age for staying at home and behaving like a lady should. To love her husband, but to still let him go on long hunting trips so that your family could make it through the next winter, whilst you would take care of the house and make sure that the children become big and strong. But you found your calling already as a child when your dear father was a dragon hunter with the previous head of the Køhler family. When you were born, you always wanted to join your father on hunting trips, but you were too young for such a long time. At home you patiently practiced archery, which is your special skill. You always hit your target, no matter how much or quickly the target moved. Your father noticed your talent, and when you turned 18, you got to join him for the first time.

You’ve stayed on that path until today, forming a deadly team with the current head of the Køhler family. As your strengths are accuracy and agility, Mathias’s strength is effective close combat, and he is also very strong. If your most common opponents were people, Mathias could make them retreat merely with his confident ”The Reaper is here”-smirk.

But, of course, you had to choose your opponent considering the fact that neither of you was afraid of challenges.

”I can’t get readier than this. Let’s go!” you smiled as you answered the Dane.

”That’s my girl. Your horse is waiting for you there behind the shed. Just a moment, I’ll go and get my axe, and everything’s ready.” Mathias patted your shoulder, smiling, and got up disappearing into the depths of his house.

You know I hate it when you say so! you laughed in your mind. Whenever he said so on a public place, for example after a bar night, you heard about it from your friends all the time.

Now I sank in my thoughts again, I’d better shake these thoughts from my shoulders or the battle won’t go well, you scolded yourself and put out the fire. Then you walked to your dear horse [the name of the horse] that has loyally been by your side from one adventure to another. You slightly stroked his/her brown mane and saddled him/her. Then you retrieved your sword from Berwald’s smithy and admired its sheen against the glowing forge.

“Wow, excellent work once again, Berwald!” you said and looked at the tall Swede gratefully in the ice blue eyes. Typically for him, he merely nodded, mumbling something, and looked at you with his basic expression which someone else would have described as a scary, penetrating stare. However, you had known Berwald long enough to be able to see admiration of bravery on his face. He himself would have certainly been glad to fight, too, but someone strong had to stay to defend home. You turned to the door to leave when you heard a calm, low voice coming from behind you.

“Be careful, ________. Promise?” Berwald said calmly, cleaning up his workshop.

You turned around to show your confident smile before you kept going. “I promise.”

You could have sworn that you heard a silent mumble in Swedish…

Söt? Meh, I probably misheard, you laughed and got your bow and a quiverful of new arrows from Tino’s place. Every arrow was made into a perfect size, and the arrowheads looked sharp enough to kill anything. “Wow, these are masterpieces!” you smiled while spinning the arrows in your hands.

”I love to hear that! I almost destroyed my own hands when sharpening the heads…” the blonde, cheery Finn laughed and smiled.

“But now I have to go and sink these masterpieces into a certain beast’s maw… Mathias is probably already waiting impatiently!” you said, hurrying to the door, waving for a goodbye.

Tino caught you into a proper bear hug before you left, whispering: ”Onnea matkaan…”

You smiled and disappeared into the dark outdoors, saying quietly back: “Kiitos…”

You rushed back to your horse, checked that the saddle is properly attached, and got up on the saddle. Mathias was already waiting with his steed on the edge of the forest, smiling his usual confident smile which you never got tired of.

“Apparently Tino and Berwald couldn’t let you go without the goodbye speeches of the century”, Mathias gave a laugh.

”Yeah, but you know them. They are constantly worried of me!”

“They simply care about you so much… But they should know that you can take care of yourself… Better than any of us”, Mathias said, and you heard deep respect from his voice.

For some reason this compliment made your cheeks glow even though the night was quite cool.

Concentrate now, my dear! Tonight’s battle might be the toughest one ever…

The steady stamping of the horses’ hooves was the only sound you heard for a while. You couldn’t deny that this battle has been milling around in your lower stomach for a while. The opponent was the biggest and the greatest dragon of the province. It had managed to hide from people on top of mountains, and every now and then it attacked small villages. But now it started moving ominously towards the main center of the province, and the king himself gave the order to kill the dragon. You and Mathias were the only ones mad enough to accept the challenge. You looked up at the mountains rising before you. Luckily the beast didn’t make his home on the utmost top of the mountain but beside a quite a sharp ravine. The full moon lit beautifully the dim path that opened up in front of you and was difficult to be seen with the naked eye.

One was able to sense a slight nervousness from Mathias, too. Instead of his usual, continuous blabbering, he looked up towards your destination silently and with a serious face. Even so, a flame of determination that encouraged him to continue burned in his eyes.

After covering your journey near the flat where the great beast slumbered, the ground was almost too sharply upward for your four-limbed friends. You spotted a tight fence formed by spruces; it would be a good hiding place for the horses. You directed [your horse’s name] carefully there with Mathias and his steed right after you. You tied your horses up to the branches of the trees and continued your journey on foot.

”What is our plan this time?” you asked quietly as you approached the beast’s hideaway.

”Let’s trust the traditional pattern as it has worked well for now. We’ll improvise if it’s necessary, right, my princess?” Mathias winked at you, tightening his grip on his axe which would have been quite challenging for you to even carry.

”Fuck dig…” you laughed and tried to slur over his flirt with humor, as always.

Before he started protesting, you silenced him quickly by putting your index finger in front of your mouth. ”Shh...”

Mathias nodded, and as if from a common understanding, you stepped on the edge of the flat. It was dead silent, and the wind made a small tornado out of snow. The small whirl spinned around as if it was waiting for action. Mathias gestured towards a nearby cave and sneaked there silently while you tried not to grind the snow under your leather shoes. On the left you noticed a small rock; you could aim safely behind it. You sneaked smoothly, soundlessly behind the rock, and took your first arrow from the quiver on your back. You put the arrow on its place on your bow, while slowly pulling the string backwards, aiming at the place where the beast would most likely lift its head when Mathias gave a sign. You turned your gaze towards the Viking who had sneaked near the Sleeping Beauty… or its tail. He looked at you and you nodded carefully, again concentrating on aiming at the creature’s carotid.

Mathias swinged his axe above his head…

The silence was broken by a snap and the beast’s roar which echoed through the air, far away to the other side of the valley. Mathias ran out of the cave in an agile way, while the beast noticed him and got quickly on its feet, making its way out of the cave.

Now it’s my turn… you thought, holding your breath, while the animal a bit torpidly tried to realize the situation and the reason why its tail tingled as if it was on fire. You pulled the string as much as you could, slightly tilting the bow in order to get a better angle and more damage. You heard a quiet tsip when the arrow took off, directly towards its target.
The dragon roared again as warm, red blood began to flow from its neck, staining the white snow. Still, the dragon wasn’t completely paralyzed, as it should have been in the best case scenario.

”Plan B!” Mathias yelled suddenly when the beast struggled in agony.

“And what’s that?” you shouted back to him, ready to take the next arrow out.

“Let’s beat the crap out of it like total badasses!” Mathias shouted, raised his axe in the air, only for sullying it in blood once again.

You took your sword from its sheath and raised it in the air, rushing towards the beast from behind the rock. You headed towards the beast’s feet so that you could climb on its back. Unfortunately, the dragon wasn’t in the mood for co-operating, and it raised its foot up, trying to leave you under it. You changed your direction on the very last moment in the slippery snow, and the big foot of the winged beast thumped in the ground right next to you with a power huge enough to make you fly face first to the snow. Mathias got the beast’s attention away from you by smacking it as much as he could. You got up right before Mathias cried out loud: “Ooops, it seems this beast got pissed! TAKE COVER, ________!”

You knew what that meant. If you wouldn’t start running for cover and  soon, the dragon would get a tasty grill bar. You quickly grabbed your bow from the ground and sprinted as fast as you could back to the rock you were behind before. You plunged behind the rock, landing on your stomach, covering your face as well as you could. And not a moment too early. You heard the dragons’ roar, and the lonely tree right next to the cave started burning even though the air temperature was clearly under zero. A hot wave sweeped above you while you held your breath, fearing for the worst.

At least this time I don’t feel my back burn as clearly as in a certain fight once... And I’m still alive, I guess. Yippee.

Suddenly you heard when the dragon stopped spitting fire and the sound of heavy steps got nearer and nearer to you. Finally, when you didn’t hear any noises, you opened your eyes and peeked carefully from behind the rock.

Only for looking straight into the emerald green eyes of the beast.

“_________! Grab my hand!” Mathias shouted suddenly, outreaching his hand on the top of the dragon’s huge nose. Without wasting a moment you jumped and reached for his hand that wrenched you quickly out of your opponent’s sight.

“This guy really doesn’t give up and die easily!” you cried out while you dunked a strike after strike to the wings, which made the animal unable to fly.

“I know! But it can’t take it any longer... All we need is just another good hit of your arrow to its neck and that should be enough!” Mathias pondered while he tried to find the weak spot of the beast’s armor.

“But I can’t shoot from this angle, it would be useless! I must get a chance to shoot the wound I made before!” you shouted and tried to hold onto the wings of the creature when it decided to play rodeo. Before Mathias was able to say anything, the dragon slapped you, using its other wing, so hard that you lost your grip. You flied in a pretty arc far away because of the hit, and you slipped very close to the ravine. Right before you almost fell down, you hit your sword into the icy ground and stopped only a meter away from the edge.

This doesn’t go well at all... you cursed to yourself and quickly got up, taking the bow and an arrow out already, aiming at the beast.

This time the dragon was prepared, and it stared at you again with those emerald green eyes without any signs of empathy. The dragon roared once and started running super quickly towards you.

Aim to the neck... you yelled to yourself, but you noticed that you couldn’t do so. Almost falling into death just moments ago depressed you completely, and even though the arrow was already aimed to its goal, you weren’t able to relax your fingers. You trembled in fear, and you panicked even more when you realized that you still stood on edge of the ravine. You were never good at dodging direct attacks, they have always been taken care of by Mathias. You were only able to watch how the seconds you had left of your life got fewer as the beast approached.

The dragon was only a few long steps away from you, and closing your eyes you felt how your heart beat like it would have wanted a parachute already.

Goodbye dad, mom, everyone I love…

“Goodbye, Mathias...” you whispered silently to the wind.

”NO!”

Suddenly you felt some strong mass push you aside, and in the middle of flying in the air you opened your eyes as a reaction. The hind legs of the dragon bypassed your face with only a few cents when you flew on a bank of snow. A bruise or two, it didn't matter to you. The stunned dragon fell over the edge.

Taking Mathias, who saved you from a very close call to death, with it to the depths of the ravine.

Even though you didn’t get any physical injuries, you felt like somebody had hit you with a huge axe in your stomach, taking all air out of your lungs.

You saw the beast rise high up in the sky without caring about its injuries, alone. Without Mathias. You forced yourself to move, not caring about the shock, and somehow you managed to run to the edge of the ravine. You looked down carefully, trying to see to the bottom.

An on and on continuing freefall was the only thing you saw... And a teardrop, which dropped down, down... endlessly.

“MATHIAS!” you cried out, burying your face in your hands when you fell down on your knees because of agitating sobbing. Tears flowed from your eyes like from a little waterfall, endless and shaking.

Why? Why did you have to sacrifice yourself?

You can’t survive a fall like that!

“You unselfish *sob* idiot…” you said to yourself through your tears.

“I *sob* never had the chance to tell...” you cried even more as your mind got over the previous shock and faced another one right after it.

“...that I love you...”

Your tears quit falling as if they hit a wall, when you heard the dragon's roar somewhere far in the horizon. It sounded like a sarcastic laugh to you and loaded you full of different kind of new energy. You got up determinately, lifting your sword from the ground above your head.

“I will revenge this, Mathias... even if I paid for it with my own life!” you yelled out, your voice full of hate and determination. You looked down in the ravine for the last time, saluting before you angrily wiped your tears away from your cheeks where they headed to all the time. You trudged to the horses, and it was heartbreaking for you to see the worried behavior of Mathias's stallion as his master didn't return.

As if it knows what happened...

You cried for a while to your horse’s mane before you got up on the saddle, tightly grabbed Mathias’s white stallion’s bridle and tied it to your horse’s horn cap. Luckily the horses knew the way home... You would have lead them into a ditch because your eyes were completely blurred by tears.

”Tell me my darling, how am I supposed to explain this to the others?”

….

~

Oh hell…

A hangover like this can’t be got with any kind of beer.

Mathias felt like someone had dropped at least a thousand kilos of rocks on him. Every one of his muscles was aching even when resting. He slowly opened his eyes but he had to close them. Sighing, he tried again. For a little while his sight was blurry, but when he forced himself to focus, he could perceive even something. Much to his surprise, he didn’t see the sky above first; he saw... a roof of timber?

“Stranger, you’re finally awake. I already got worried that you wouldn't wake up at all”, Mathias heard a deep voice say next to him. He turned his head to the left and noticed an old lady sitting next to him and watching him kindly. Her brown hair already had some grey shades, and she was dressed in a classic, brown dress which included a slightly washed-out apron. The woman continued speaking, nodding to his direction: “You have very many bruises all around your body.”

Mathias looked around, trying to remember what the hell had happened.

I… am Mathias Køhler, a dragon hunter.

How have I ended up here, to the house of an unknown woman?

Mathias rubbed his forehead and got up, grunting because of pain.

The dragon...

Suddenly everything came back to his mind as flashes.

The fight at the mountains...

_________...

Falling from the mountains to the deep ravine...

The lady smiled and said with her calm voice while walking to the table: “I just baked some bread, you’re surely hungry. You were unconscious for so long that I suspected it was too late...”

Mathias nodded gratefully and started to eat with good appetite. Still so many questions spun around and around in his mind so that he couldn’t be quiet any longer.

”How long was I unconscious...? And how did you find me... or how I did get here?”

“Maybe about four days. I was checking my fishing nets at that lake next to us, when you fell head-first in front of my boat, clearly from somewhere high. Luckily for you, I hadn’t moved forward... On the other hand it was also my luck, because your huge axe slashed a slice of my boat’s edge”, the lady chuckled. “When I lifted you in the boat, you were covered all around in bloody scratches and there was a bloody mark on the back of your head. Because of that you lost your consciousness, I guess. I dragged you to my house and cleaned all of the wounds, waiting and hoping for the best.”

~

“Are you sure you are in a condition good enough for leaving already, sir?” the lady worriedly asked Mathias at the main door.

“I believe so. Madam, I can never thank you enough for rescuing my life.. How much do I owe you?” Mathias started to search his money bag from his belt.

“Oh dear Lord, nothing at all!” the lady tried to stop him.

Mathias didn’t care about lady’s attempts to refuse and gave a lot of gold to the woman, closing the gold between her hands and putting his own hands on hers, looking at her in the eyes seriously.

“Take them, or my mind will be weighted by guilt forever. I humbly thank you a thousand times”, Mathias stated, pressing a quick kiss on the lady’s hand before he threw his axe onto his shoulders and waved for a goodbye.

Mathias started walking to the direction where the lady advised, towards the closest village. When he looked on his left, he saw the lake that the lady had mentioned and the really sharp wall of the mountain. He remembered  ________  again and got lost in his thoughts.

________-... I’m sorry for taking you to a danger like that... Maybe it would be better if we didn't meet anymore, even though only the thought of that hurts more than a dagger in the heart.

I don’t care about myself, but your safety is the most important thing to me.

The monologue of Mathias was interrupted by a roar of a dragon, and he intuitively tightened his grip on his axe, yelling angrily.

”_________... I won’t rest before the dragon that separated us is dead!”

~

Stay where you are, my beauty. For a little moment...

With slow moves you reached to your back for taking an arrow, and put it carefully on your bow, bending the bow slowly backwards. You closed your other eye and aimed at the body of a squirrel which seemed to be listening to what is happening on surrounding areas.

Tsup.

You let the arrow fly across the air, and it pierced the poor squirrel’s body exactly in the middle. The dead squirrel fell down from the tree immediately. You jumped quietly from the bushes and threw the corpse to the other squirrel leathers of yours, smiling satisfiedly.
“The hawker will surely pay a good price of this...” you smiled and whistled. [your horse’s name] trotted to you from a little distance. You scratched his/her mane a little before you swayed yourself onto his/her back, heading towards a small village nearby. This was actually only the second time this year when you showed up on any public places. After Mathias’s death you have been travelling around the province of Skyrim, looking for the one certain dragon, without results. Like that bastard knew that you would kill it and disappeared like the Earth had eaten it. Sometimes you felt like there was no point in this revenge trip anymore.

I bet someone has done so already... you sighed, trying to shake your sadness off of your shoulders.

But I have to try, for honouring Mathias’s memory. Guilt and anger kept driving you forward; there you have two sources of power that you never run out of.

So, it has been over two years now...

Memories were as clear as crystal, so you felt like everything had happened only yesterday.

When after a forever-lasting trip you finally arrived at your home garden, Tino and Berwald were already waiting outside. Tino’s eyes got filled with tears when he saw you arrive, with only two horses with you, still unable to stop crying. You were so transfixed where you were that Berwald helped you down from the saddle. Your legs would have collapsed under you if Berwald hadn't been prepared for it, lifted you up carefully and carried you inside the house, avoiding hurting you any more. You weren’t able to say anything, so the silent presence of Berwald was more than a blessing from God. Tino walked by the house, taking the horses’ saddles to the warehouse. He peeked inside the house through the window and saw how Berwald sat on the bed, holding tearful _______ on his lap, trying to lull her carefully. The man lifted his gaze up to the window and stared at Tino with his ice blue eyes, while a salty and bitter tear slowly fell down on his cheek.

Tino swallowed his tears and somehow managed to take the saddles to their right places before he walked inside with heavy footsteps. Without saying a word, he sat down next to Berwald, stroking the girl's beautiful hair.

There they all were for a long time, mind so full of questions but still unable to think about anything.

You woke up from your memories when you almost hit your head on a branch. You had travelled the whole distance to the village, and you wiped a tear away from your cheek annoyedly. Even though Mathias was dead, he won't leave your mind in peace... And your longing won’t take a break even for a little moment. Every time you lied down on the ground outside, trying to fall asleep, gazing up to the night sky made you think about him.

Here I would look up in the sky and Mathias would sit next to me, always making me laugh. He always figured out something funny that the constellations form. And no matter how much I protested, he always kept telling me: “Somewhere out there is our own star, only for the two of us. If we look at it from anywhere in the world, our souls are forever one.”

You gazed up to the sky, but there were no stars to see. Of course there weren’t, it was midday.

How I miss you, Mathias, all of your stupid ideas and funny nicknames to me. You always said that I’m your princess forever...

I wish I would have believed you…

~

“Are you crazy, young man? There haven’t been any dragons in Skyrim in many years!”

“Okay, thanks for your time anyway”, Mathias sighed and walked to his stallion.

Haven’t seen any dragons, huh? Must I show one to you?

If I only found that bastard first…

How long has he looked for and asked if anyone has seen that eaten-by-the-Earth-dragon? Two years already. He marked a new cross on his map of Skyrim which was already full of them. He has toured almost every possible village, asking. But nobody knew where the beast had gone. He has also asked about a young girl who travels with a brown chestnut horse and uses a bow as her weapon. But it seemed like ________ had disappeared with the dragon also. Mathias remembers the mutual shock what his homecoming caused like it had happened only yesterday...

After a long, long walk, the tired Viking finally trudged on one rainy night to the door of his house and knocked loudly. Tino opened the door, holding a sword in his other hand. “Who the hell is there at this time...”

Only the sound of metal hitting the floor could be heard when he stared at the tall Danish man in front of him in a shock. “Oh well, nice to see you too-“ Mathias chuckled sarcastically and coughed when the much shorter Finn grabbed him into a tight hug.

“YOU’RE STILL ALIVE!” he shouted, waking up Berwald from the next room. Berwald got up, rubbing his eyes. “Tino, what are you...” he mumbled and almost dropped his glasses. “M-Mathias?” Man grinned, trying to move from the door with Tino who still hung onto him. “You can't get rid of me that easily!” he laughed. “Okay, where’s _______? I wanna see her!”

Berwald said quietly: “I’m afraid it’s not possible right now...” Mathias lifted his eyebrows in an inquiring way, when Tino coughed and said: “Well, here’s the problem... _______ thought that you died and for revenging it she went to hunt that dragon. We wouldn’t have let her go, but she escaped last night and took her horse with her. She only wrote quickly this message.” He took a piece of paper from the table and gave it to Mathias.

To Berwald & Tino

When you'll find this letter, I’m already far away.
I can’t carry this guilt any longer... I have to revenge for Mathias. Otherwise I can never find peace. My thoughts spin around and around him, only him. I’ll take my dear [your horse’s name] with me and I’ll find that beast. And I’ll make it regret ending the life of Mathias. He had many great things to experience... I love you all, but I just can’t stand still anymore. Berwald, keep the house in a good condition as always. And don’t worry about Tino too much, he’s able to protect himself well!
Until we meet again, with love.
______

Mathias read the paper twice, and a teardrop fell in the middle of the paper when he read the words again and again. “Min prinsesse..."

Since then, Mathias also has travelled around the land, trying to find the dragon and his girl. He hasn’t seen the girl nor the dragon anywhere. Guilt pressed his back into a stoop. What if the girl has gotten hurt and lies somewhere in the forest alone in a totally helpless state?

Calm down, Mathias. _______ can take care of herself, you know it very well.

That fact calmed him down a little bit, before he remembered that he was the reason why the girl travels around and around the country, bitterly and full of hate. He knew _______ so well that he approximately knew what she thinks. She thinks that all is her fault, and scourges herself forward.

When it comes to that thing, they are the same.

I have asked everyone in this village... Maybe I could tour around the square. It was our common habit, to go to the square and buy something after a successful fight, even though she didn’t really care about stockpiling stuff, Mathias pondered, when he arrived to the truly beautiful square, whose big cobblestones felt nice under his feet. Oh, there’s a some kind of party going on, he figured out by looking around him. Farther from him he saw a local troubadour playing and people dancing to the beat of the music.

~

You counted the total of your money purse with a satisfied smile on your face. Just like you expected, the merchant paid a good price for squirrel leathers. At the same time you listened when the troubadour played, and swayed a little to the beat of the music. You looked around and saw many different kinds of people who seemed so happy.

Granddads and grandchildren playing around in a circle, young people jamming and adults who were changing news with their friends. There were only a few people who were alone, just like you. Your gaze got stuck on one tall man. He looked a little tired, like he had travelled a long, long way there. His blond hair sticked out all around, and those deep ocean blue eyes...

A mild shock surged through you, when you realized why the young man looked so familiar, and your pulse suddenly rose to very high levels.

No... It... can’t… be...

You yanked your light brown hood for covering your head and face when the man suddenly noticed that you were staring at him.

~

Suddenly Mathias felt like somebody was staring at him, and looked around so that he could find the person. He noticed a young woman, who quickly covered her face with a hood, but not quickly enough. He saw her dainty facial features and familiar [your eye color] eyes. His heart skipped a beat when he realized why those foxy eyes seemed so familiar...

________-...

Mathias took a step towards the girl, who clearly got scared because of him and sneaked quickly to the crowd. In a few seconds Mathias lost the girl from his sight.

Her distinctive agility…

~

Damn, now I start seeing hallucinations! That guy looked just like Mathias... But he can’t be! Mathias is dead!

~

In the evening you sat in the local bar, “celebrating” your day in civilization. You didn’t know anybody there, so you sat in a corner place with two or three men... They spoke more or less about unnecessary topics, more or less drunken. Actually you couldn’t have cared less about their company, but their inconsistent topics kept your thoughts away from Mathias even for a little moment. You sat like “a weird stranger”: a hood on your head, covering your face from the curious ones without saying a word to those drunken. You almost considered leaving, when one of the men moved into an interesting topic.

“*hig* These areass arre dangerous for being alone, do you know thatt my girl?” the man slurred, trying catch eye contact to you.

“I know... but I do fine on my own.” you sighed and stared at the bottom of your mug. You didn’t feel like drinking.

“I don’t doubt tthat, you knoow. But... Thiss dangerr is something totally different from any kind of rapisst...” the man gazed around and whispered to you smelling of, ah, lovely,  beer.

“Chan you keep a secret?”

“Sure, go ahead, you won’t remember telling this to me in the morning anyway…” you smiled a little, more curiously.

“Nonsense! Anywayy... When I was coming heere, I saw a huuge dragon! It almost burnt my ass bristles, you know! Goddammit how big beasst it was! For shome reason it’s tail wass ruptured... That was weeird, you know my girl”, the man explained, with the pitch rising all the time.

You heart skipped a beat when the man mentioned the dragon.

The tail was ruptured? That can’t be anything else but… Hell yeah! Tonight I’ll finally kill that damned beast!

You grabbed the man from his collar and demanded: “Where did you saw that animal? I can go and revenge for your ass bristles!”

“No need to, they’re just fine, thank youu... *hig* But if you want really to know, thatt beast was somewhere shouth from here, about five kilometress away. You know those *hig* stalagmite caves?” the man spoke with a little slow rhythm.

You let the man fall on his chair and stood up promptly. “Yeah, I know. Thank you for the advice, friend.”

“Miss! Are you completely sure that you want to go theree? It’ss dangerous!” the man said now almost shouting.

“I have nothing to lose...” you mumbled and strided out of the bar, where a little silence landed before you opened the door and slammed the door shut.

He can tell anything when he’s drunk, but I have to try!

~

Mathias sat in his favourite bar of the village, but this time without taking drinking games. He drank his mug empty quickly as always, thinking over and over the day’s events in his mind.

The girl I saw on the square earlier today... It was harder to recognize her because of the hood, but not impossible. The gaze of those eyes was so full of willpower and amazement... How strong can a gaze be! Those [your eye color] mirrors of the soul can’t belong to anyone else but ________.

Or maybe I hope so…
Mathias sighed aloud, hoping that somebody would invent a spell or a curing medicine for yearning and a broken heart.

Though the joy of life that she always had couldn’t be found on that girl’s face. Though Tino always says that I’m only a shadow of myself when I visit home sometimes. Dammit…
Suddenly Mathias discerned a few words in the middle of his thoughts and the whole bar got silent. “Miss! …… It’ss dangerous!” He turned his gaze to a young lady who walked with determined steps to the main door and slammed it shut.

That’s the same woman! Now I have to find out if it’s only my mind playing tricks on me!
Mathias let his gaze go around the bar, when he spotted an empty place opposite from the same man who shouted only a moment ago. Mathias got there with a few steps and asked calmly: “Excuse me sir, but do you know where that miss was going?”

The man started to be so badly drunk that it took much time to tell the story, but finally, assisted by Mathias’s intimidating gestures, the man told him everything. Mathias thanked the man and scooted out to the night after the girl.

~

You slowed your horse’s speed to trot when you saw a huge cave ahead, just a little distance from you, just like the man said. Looking at it from farther off, the inlet of the cave looked more like the mouth of some beast, which recommends sane people to around while they still can. The whole place glowed with danger, which made even the nature silent, as if it held its breath. None of the birds sung, the squirrels stayed in their nests. Even the wind didn’t blow. Everywhere was so silent, but you could sense the suspense smoldering under the surface as a tingle running down your spine. You shook off thoughts from your mind and left your horse behind thick willows. You kissed his/her crown and whispered: “Wish me luck.”

You turned around and sneaked to the inlet of the cave using shadows, peeking carefully inside.

We meet again, old friend... you smiled twistedly when you saw the dragon sleep calmly. You saw that the old wounds have left good scars which were hopefully as painful as they could possibly be.

We managed to make that much damage that it couldn’t fly back to the mountains. Good. This time this should turn out well, you thought while sneaking down to the hillside closer to the dragon. The suspense tingled in your every cell so much that you forgot to mind your steps. You stepped by mistake on a rolling stone, which slipped under you, falling down towards the dragon.

Fuck.

The beast woke up when it felt a sudden slam on its head. You stared again to those emerald green eyes which clearly seemed to remember you. The dragon roared and rose towards you, with those deathly sharp nails. You ran a little higher where the nails couldn’t reach and took the first arrow from the quiver on your back. When you turned around you aimed to the beast and shot the first arrow. It reached the goal in a little bit bad angle but made your enemy get even angrier. It chased you towards a confined area, and there was no way out. You ran backwards, shooting an arrow after arrow, making the beast slow down a little.

It is clearly still wounded, but not enough...

Bleeding badly, the dragon stopped for a while, and you saw your chance. You ran as fast as you could to another cave.

I don’t dare to try out of the cave... There the dragon would have room for flying, and then my chances to win would pour down the drain. Plus a bush fire wouldn’t do good for anyone.

The beast was on the move again, and blew a stream of fire after you. You made it behind a rock where you were safe from the fire, even though you felt a burning heat everywhere around. You put a new arrow ready, stretching the bow already. Finally you showed yourself by jumping in front of the dragon, aiming to its eyes. You relaxed your fingers and let the arrow fly.

Tsup.

The dragon’s scream of pain proved that you hit your target. The amount of adrenalin increased in your blood, fizzing when you reached to take the next arrow from the quiver. You had only two arrows left, so they had to hit their target well. With a firm grip you took your bow and bended it, this time aiming at the carotid. You closed your other eye, and felt your heartbeat strongly in your throat.

Just aim well, _______...

You took a few steps towards the dragon, already certain of winning.

A bad mistake.

The dragon decided to play “the tail of the mouse”-game, suddenly turning around and with its strong tail, or what was left of it, taking you for a little fly through the air. The arrow flew from your hands to the skies, far from the target.

You watched when the distance between you and the beast grew, before you felt dazzling pain in your back when you crashed onto the cave’s hard-as-rock wall. You fought against passing out right away. Right when you got over one shock, you ploughed into the ground and your vertebras moved with a nasty sound.

“Bloody hell...” you swore to yourself, trying to stand up. The dragon glared at you before it slowly started walking towards you with a killing shine glowing in its eyes. The lust of blood.

No... I can’t lose to that devil again! you swore when your legs refused to follow your orders.

Suddenly you felt how someone lifted you up from your armpits and dragged you behind the rock, where the dragon couldn’t fit in any way. “W-what the hell?” you let out before you made a quick decision:

First I’ll make sure that bastard dies, now is not the best moment for thanks. I don’t think that he or she wants to kill me, he or she would have done it already.

Without looking at who or what saved you, you took your last arrow from the quiver and bended you bow for the last time, jumping out of your hiding place. You saw the earlier wound that you aimed at, closing your other eye. When you let go of the arrow, you closed the other eye and waited. Tsup- and the voice of skin being cut.

The dragon’s cry of pain.

Wait a minute, skin being cut?

You opened your eyes, seeing the dragon’s huge corpse fall into two pieces before you. The neck and the head severed from the rest of the body. You gazed into the bastard's emerald green eyes for the last time, when the life disappeared from them. On the corpse you noticed your own arrow and…

..a sharp, huge axe?

My arrow alone couldn’t have slit the throat, but an axe like that cuts anything...

You heard puffing behind you and turned around to see your savior.

That smile can’t be confused with others... you thought when tears of happiness started flowing from your eyes.

You took a few steps and jumped to those strong arms that you have missed so long. You squeezed him as hard as you could, making sure that you weren't only imagining. You somehow managed to say through the tears: “I-I thought you were dead!”

“You can’t get rid of me that easily, darling!” Mathias laughed, ocean blue eyes shining with happiness.

You lifted your head up from his lap so that you could once again look at the face you had missed for so long. You smiled more radiantly than ever; for the last few years you thought you’d never do so anymore. You wrapped your arms behind Mathias’s neck, letting them rest there. “You have no idea of how many times I’ve regretted not telling you how much you mean to me…” you said, your voice shaking a little, keeping an eye contact with the Dane.

Mathias noticed a small tear… and another one… running down his cheek. You felt like you could drown into those eyes, and Mathias slightly tilted his head to the right as he stooped down to you. With his other hand he carefully held your cheek which glowed healthy red. He closed his eyes, laid his hand on your waist and kissed you tenderly, tasting the salty tears that blended in. It felt like the time stopped when you lived the moment you had wished and longed for such a long time… You closed your eyes, following his moves. You felt hundreds of butterflies take off in your stomach, and you sunk your fingers into his blonde, thick hair. Mathias felt a warm flame in his chest and licked your lips before separating his from yours with a quiet squelch, brushing your nose with his. He whispered quietly, barely audibly:

”Jeg elsker dig...”
